The Beat: Maybe Tomorrow
It's May tomorrow, see what I did there?
Welcome to The Beat by Rockstar CMO. Delighted you are here! I’m Ian Truscott, and I intend to share a mix of what’s caught my eye from the Rockstar CMO community, the latest discussions from the podcast and our street knowledge blog.
If you’ve opened a few of these newsletters since I rebooted it a few months ago, you might have noticed I’m using song titles in the subject line. And as it’s May tomorrow as I send this, I’ve gone with Maybe Tomorrow, by the Stereophonics, as May be tomorrow. (Sorry!)
What does May starting tomorrow mean for us marketers? Well, depending on your business, you’ve either kicked off the new financial year in April and are getting deep into the first quarter, or maybe if you go by the regular calendar, it’s Q2. In either case, if you are like me, you are probably wondering where the hell 2023 is going! So maybe a good time to look at our goals.
Recently my regular podcast guest, former Forrester Research Director Jeff Clark, has been talking about this a lot on the podcast. If you are thinking about your metrics, take a look at his latest article: Five Principles for Setting Marketing Goals.
But, it’s probably not just a good time to review our goals at work, but how are we doing against our personal goals? I’ve chatted with executive coach and author Richard Medcalf a couple of times on the podcast (most recently on episode 143), and he has a model for creating goals called WISE, which you can read about on his website here.
And I can’t mention coaches and goals without dropping in a mention of my chum Caroline Kay. Again, someone who has been on the podcast a couple of times, she’s a wonderful coach who has her podcast Snippets of Genius, and with her enthusiasm, is a real pick me up.
It’s stuff I have been working on, although we don’t often talk about personal goals on Rockstar CMO, but may be something we should cover. Let me know if it’s a topic you’d like to hear about.
So, what may be tomorrow for us marketers? Well, wherever it is, let’s define our goals and plan how to get there.

Also, if you listen to the podcast and ideas for topics for me to discuss with my colleague Jeff, would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for getting this far! Have a great week.

Not the most upbeat of tunes, but May does be tomorrow, as I send this on the last day of April.
