Fairytale of New York
Your dreams, babe, I kept them with my own.
Welcome to The Beat by Rockstar CMO. I’m Ian Truscott, a CMO, trusted advisor, strategy consultant, and Chief Bottle Washer at Rockstar CMO. In this newsletter, I’d like to share a mix of what’s caught my eye, topics from our podcast, and our street knowledge blog.
Happy Monday!
It’s that time of year, Christmas if that’s your persuasion, the holidays, or maybe the pagan tradition of Yule. However you celebrate a few days off work, maybe gifting, eating, and drinking more than you would on a normal Wednesday.
Unless of course, every hump day is like Christmas, then I want to be in your gang. In any case, thanks for opening this, and I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday.
When it comes to songs for Wednesday, well, we are big fans of the classics, and Nat King Cole croons away as we enjoy our traditional turkey, but my favorite is Fairy Tale of New York by the Pogues.
Yes, while the song and the video has a somewhat melancholy vibe, I love it, and it certainly planted an itch of being in New York that I scratched from working there for a couple of years (and to be honest, so did the video for Jump Around by House of Pain), but the line I want to pluck out for a marketing newsletter is this:
[ as they are singing about dreams ]
I kept them with me babe - I put them with my own
And, without sounding too schmaltzy, awww… come on, it’s Christmas… sorry I mean Wednesday… that’s what we have to do as marketing leaders, as consultants, or whatever role you play in advancing the goals of business you are working with.
Take their dreams and make them your own.
Now, I would argue that those dreams need to be to create ART, Awareness, Revenue, and Trust, but I once worked with a CEO who described where he wanted the company to get to as “chocolate island”.
Like Fairy Tale of New York, a song about a rocky relationship, it’s not always a fairy tale, and of course, being all in and vested doesn’t always reward the way we’d hope. I can share some of those stories over a beer; the the dream is always theirs.
The function of marketing is not to do good marketing (as judged by other marketers); that’s not a goal; it’s to make the dreams of others happen.
Thank you for indulging me by reading this newsletter; happy holidays, however you celebrate.
As you probably know, you only know if these things cut through when recipients click the links, so please take a look at what I shared below, or share this with someone you think likes marketing emails themed with song titles!
Cheers!
Ian
